The vibrant celebrations of Sharad Navratri swept through the sixth form in an unforgettable manner. This year, students and staff had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich culture and traditions of India as they attended a Garba dance class, held in collaboration with Durham University’s Bollywood Society.
Sharad Navratri is a Hindu festival that spans nine nights, and is celebrated with immense passion in various parts of India. The celebrations honour the goddess Durga and signifies the triumph of good over evil. It provides an opportunity for people to come together in joyous celebration. It is a time for worship, dance, and community bonding. The traditional Garba dance is a significant part of these festivities. It involves dancing in circular formations with colourful attire and rhythmic claps to the beat of traditional music.
The collaboration with Durham University’s Bollywood Society meant that the university students, well-versed in various Indian dance forms, brought their expertise to Durham Sixth Form Centre, sharing their knowledge and passion for Bollywood dance and, of course, Garba. The students and staff were also introduced to the history and significance of Garba, emphasising its connection to Sharad Navratri and the broader cultural context. For many, this was their first experience with Garba, and it was heartening to see how quickly they picked up the steps and immersed themselves in the dance.
The event provided a wonderful opportunity for cultural enrichment, fostering a sense of appreciation for the diverse traditions that exist in our globalised world. The event was not only a celebration of Indian culture but also an opportunity for cultural exchange and unity. It allowed students to appreciate the diversity of their own community and understand the importance of respecting and learning from different cultures.
