As a result of her outstanding contribution within Army Cadets, Year 12 student Keira Hughes has been selected to be one of the Lord Lieutenant’s cadets in County Durham for the year ahead.
Keira has been a member of Annfield Plain detachment for nearly five years and has been incredibly successful in rising to the rank of Corporal. Duties have included supporting a number of local events such as Tanfield Railway, Perkinsville Residents Association and Sunderland Scramble, which mostly have included assisting the elderly or young people with Autism. One of Keira’s achievements in the Cadet Force was winning Champion shot at a GP Rifle SAAM. She also takes part in parades twice weekly, trains in first-aid, shooting, field craft and navigation along with attending camps and is working towards Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
Keira was recommended for the position of Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet by her detachment commander for being a good role model for young people and having a keen desire to go above and beyond in everything she does, amongst many other positive attributes. In her spare time she also volunteers in the community at the local youth clubs, supporting children and young people with activities and helping them build life skills.
With it being Jubilee year it will be an extra busy one. As one of the Lord Lieutenant’s cadets, Keira will accompany the monarch’s representative, Lord Lieutenant Mrs Sue Snowdon, on duties across the year. These will include escorting royal visitors, acting as a liaison with local units of the military, presenting medals and awards on behalf of the sovereign, participating in civic, voluntary and social activities to name a few.
Keira joined Durham Sixth Form Centre from Tanfield School to study Biology, Criminology and Applied Psychology and is hoping to progress to university to study Criminal Psychology. Her plans beyond university would be to join the police as a forensic scientist. We wish Keira all the very best with her duties and studies and congratulate her on all the fantastic achievements.
