A Level / 2 year Course / Edexcel

The aim of the course is to develop an understanding of the workings of the UK economy. This course investigates how firms operate in different markets, the impact of economic activity on the environment and society as a whole.

Students will:

  • Develop economic concepts and theories through a critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life.
  • Select, interpret and use appropriate data from a range of sources.
  • Analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role
    of government within it.
  • Develop a critical approach to economic models and methods of enquiry.
  • Study the national and international economy to develop an understanding of the European Union, China and India and the impact they could have on our future.
  • Study the social and economic impact of globalisation.

Teaching and learning methods

Students are introduced to economics through building knowledge of core microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts, and by investigating economic theory through real-world businesses and the environments in which they operate. Breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding with applications to more complex concepts and models are developed in the second year of study. Students will need to apply their knowledge and understanding to both familiar and unfamiliar contexts in the assessment and demonstrate an awareness of current economic events and policies.

Assessment

  • Paper 1 (2 hours, 35%): Markets and how they work
  • Paper 2 (2 hours, 35%): Competing in the global economy
  • Paper 3 (2 hours, 30%): The economic environment and business

A Level Economics develops critical thinking, data analysis, and problem-solving skills that are highly valuable in today’s fast-paced world. You'll learn how economies function, explore market behaviour, and understand the impacts of government policies. These skills are in demand in careers such as financial analysis, business consulting, government roles, and market research. Whether you want to work in banking, international trade, public policy, or corporate strategy, A Level Economics provides a strong foundation for diverse, high-paying, and impactful career opportunities.

Subject Combination

Subjects that compliment economics include accounting, law, geography, history and politics. Please be aware some universities will only accept one A Level from Economics and Business.
