Year 13 student Daisie Winter has recently won a silver medal at the European Karate championships which was hosted in Florence, Italy earlier this month. After completing her GCSE studies at Biddick Academy, Daisie chose Durham Sixth Form Centre to study Criminology, Sport and Health & Social Care alongside devoting her spare time to Karate, at her local club Kensho Karate in Gateshead, where she has trained since the age of six.
Attaining her first Dan Black Belt in 2018, one of the youngest to achieve at this level in the region, was another great success. This feat was surpassed in 2021 when a second Dan Black Belt was achieved.
Travelling all over the UK and Europe to compete at National and International level is a regular occurrence. Competing at the World Championships in Slovakia in 2019 in a number of categories and coming fourth in one of the competitions, was another highlight.
The trip to Italy was exciting to attend with fellow team mates from the UK. The World Union of Karate-Do Federations (WUKF) is an international Karate body and one of the largest in the world, which exists to provide high level Karate competition for athletes across the globe. Competing in three categories alongside her teammates and going on to win Silver in the 16-17 year old category was another great accomplishment. Daisie commented βI was thrilled to win silver at this highly competitive level and Iβm looking forward to going to the World Championships in Dundee next year. Also the Europeans 2023, which will be held in France.β
Following her studies here at Durham Sixth Form Centre, Daisie hopes to progress to university to study Criminology. We wish her the very best in all future endeavors.
