BTEC / 2 year Course / Pearson

The course covers a range of sports-related units, providing a well-rounded look at areas like fitness training, coaching, sports psychology, anatomy, and nutrition. It helps students explore different aspects of sport, allowing them to discover their interests and strengths. Through a mix of practical and theoretical learning, the course prepares students for various career opportunities and further studies, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the sports industry.

This course has been designed as a full two-year programme of study, equivalent to three A-levels, enabling students to develop a substantial common core of knowledge, including:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Coaching for Performance and Fitness Training and Programming.

It includes specific mandatory units which are related to the pathway such as the development and provision of sport, and sports coaching. It also allows students the maximum opportunity to study in more depth a full range of optional areas of their choice.

Teaching and learning methods

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport Coaching also provides a well established route into a variety of specialist Higher Education (HE) courses, fully meeting entry requirements for most courses.

Students can achieve breadth of study through the large core and extensive options, as well as by studying complementary qualifications alongside it. The qualification allows students to develop the wide-ranging knowledge, understanding and skills required for direct progression into a broad range of roles within the sports/leisure industry.

Assessment

Students complete the following seven mandatory units:

  • Careers in the Sport & Active Leisure Industry
  • Health, Wellbeing & Sport
  • Developing Coaching Skills
  • Applied Coaching Skills
  • Research Project in Sport
  • Sports Development
  • Self Employment in Sport & Physical Activity.

And five optional units chosen from the following

  • Sports Psychology
  • Anatomy & Physiology in Sport
  • Fitness Testing
  • Fitness Training
  • Organising Events in Sport & Physical Activity/Nutrition for Physical Performance.
