Global Economics Seminar

Durham Sixth Form Centre students gained invaluable insights into global economic development as they welcomed Li Lou, a World Bank representative in Washington DC, for an exclusive virtual seminar. The webinar provided our business and economics students with a unique opportunity to learn directly from an expert about one of the world’s most influential financial institutions.

Students were given a comprehensive overview of the World Bank’s evolution, beginning with its establishment at the historic Bretton Woods Conference in 1944. Students learned how the institution played a pivotal role in Europe’s post-war reconstruction and how it has since transformed into a global development powerhouse. The session explored the World Bank’s current mission to reduce global poverty and promote sustainable development in low-income countries. Li Lou explained the various financial instruments the Bank employs, including loans, grants, and guarantees for private investment, demonstrating how these tools work together to support economic growth in developing nations.

Of particular interest to our A-Level students was the discussion of the World Bank’s funding model and its role as a lender of last resort. They learned how the institution helps prevent sovereign defaults and maintains global financial stability, connecting theoretical concepts from the classroom to real-world economic challenges.

The webinar with Li Lou brought our syllabus to life. Our students gained practical insights into international development and financial institutions that will prove invaluable for their studies and future careers in global finance and economics.
