Art, Craft and Design

A Level / 2 year Course / AQA

This course allows students to dissect artists, techniques and creative processes across a broad range of art, craft and design based disciplines. Students are encouraged to trial both new and traditional media and experiment across different art specialisms before developing personalised outcomes. Sketchbooks will be used to capture and document this work.

More on this course

Art, craft and design is inclusive of all art specialisms and allows students to explore drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, illustration, digital work, photography, moving image and installation.

Students will develop transferable and employable skills such as; critical thinking, problem solving and research based practice.

Teaching and learning methods

Students will have starting points through a series of mini projects which allows them to complete significant research before moving onto skills based workshops. These workshops will cover many techniques such as hand building ceramics, experimental photography, print making, ADOBE Photoshop editing, typography and drawing techniques. Students are expected to create resolved outcomes informed by their research and practical work.

This will culminate in a curated public exhibition allowing students to take ownership of their own spaces later in Year 12. Students will work in sketchbooks and partake in group critiques as well as extensive 1:1 tutorials. They will get the opportunity to work with practising artists and to go on trips and gallery visits. Students will have access to engage in extracurricular events and opportunities.

Assessment

Component 1: (60% of final mark) Students choose a personal investigation to explore based around a central theme of their choosing. This starts with a significant research essay and moves into research into practitioners, experimentation leading to the development of work through subthemes. This will be resolved through a series of final outcomes.

Component 2: Externally set task (40% of final mark) Students respond to a stimulus, provided by AQA, to produce work which provides evidence of their ability to work independently within specified time constraints, developing a personal and meaningful response which addresses all the assessment objectives and leads to a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes.
