This course enables students to focus on the dynamic nature of the contemporary business world, as well as providing opportunities for research into topical business issues and the development and application of a full range of academic skills including problem solving, challenging assumptions and critical analysis.

Component 1: Business Opportunities and Functions: Collectively, the two areas covered in this component will give students an understanding of the important role played by small businesses in the economy and the opportunities which exist for entrepreneurs, as well as the importance of established businesses and not-for-profit organisations in providing goods and services.

Component 2: Business Analysis and Strategy: Building on the theory introduced in Component 1, the emphasis in this component is on understanding and using analytical techniques and developing appropriate business strategies. Students will develop analytical skills to investigate business opportunities and problems in a number of different contexts and evaluate a range of quantitative and qualitative data to suggest possible strategic responses from businesses.

Component 3: Business in a Changing World: Component 3 focuses on how businesses adapt to succeed in a dynamic external environment. Students will develop an understanding of how the business world never stands still and there are continuous opportunities and threats to businesses of all sizes.

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching A Level Business involves a range of methods that engage students with both theoretical and practical elements of business studies. The subject requires students to understand concepts such as management, marketing, finance, and operations, while also developing analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

Assessment

The A Level Business course is assessed at the end of Year 13 by three examinations which are all 2 hours 15 minutes in length and are equally weighted towards the final qualification.

Component 1: Business Opportunities and Functions

  • Section A – compulsory short-answer questions
  • Section B – compulsory data response questions

Component 2: Business Analysis and Strategy

  • Compulsory data response and structured questions

Component 3: Business in a Changing World

  • Section A – compulsory questions based on a case study
  • Section B – one synoptic essay from a choice of three
