A Level / 2 year Course / AQA

The course aims to develop an awareness of the link between theory and experiment as well as the responsible use of scientific knowledge and evidence. It also aims to encourage students to appreciate the contribution of chemistry to society.

More on this course

Students will study the three branches of chemistry: organic, inorganic and physical.

Teaching and learning methods

Lessons are a mixture of theory and practical work. There is a strong emphasis on explaining the outcome of practical work using the theory learned. Progress is monitored throughout the course using cumulative progress assessments and mock exams.

Assessment

The A Level is a linear course with assessment 100% by examination at the end of Year 13.

  • Paper 1 – Inorganic and Physical (35%)
  • Paper 2 – Organic and Physical (35%)
  • Paper 3 – Practical, data handling and synopsis (30%)

A practical endorsement is also undertaken to show proficiency of skill, however does not contribute to the final A Level grade, this constitutes as a pass or not classified on the A Level certificate.

Skills and Careers Insight

A Level Chemistry develops analytical thinking, problem-solving, and practical laboratory skills, making you a strong critical thinker. You'll gain expertise in chemical reactions, materials, and data analysis, which are highly valued in fields like medicine, pharmaceuticals, engineering, and environmental science. This qualification opens doors to careers such as chemistry research, forensic science, healthcare, chemical engineering, and even finance or law, where logical reasoning is essential. Whether you aim to become a doctor, scientist, or innovator in technology, A Level Chemistry provides a solid foundation for a successful and rewarding career.

Subject Combination

Chemistry complements study in both physics and biology. Due to the mathematical content in the specification, it is strongly advised that students study at least Level 3 Mathematical Studies.
