Forensic and Criminal Investigation

This vocational course focuses on the practical application of knowledge. The course content includes all three academic sciences, physiology and forensic science. There is a wide variety of assessment methods, making it interesting and engaging.

You should have a real interest in science and criminology. As a scientist, you must be willing to learn new scientific skills, problem solve and explore the exciting world of forensic science.

This course aims to:

  • Give students the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification that can be used when applying either for future education or employment.
  • Provide a wide-ranging, intellectually demanding vocational learning experience.
  • Use the motivating interest in science and forensics to promote academic learning.
  • Give students opportunities to acquire a scientific understanding of forensics including practical skills and the applications of criminal investigations.
  • It will extend the students’ knowledge in all aspects of criminal science.

Teaching and learning methods

Forensic and Criminal Investigation, which is equivalent to 2 A Levels, is a two year course, in which students will develop their knowledge in science by studying for examined units focusing on both science and criminology. The first year of study focuses on the application of science, practical techniques, report writing and physiology. The second year of study focuses on the applications of criminology, forensic genetics and criminal law.

Given the vocational nature of the course, students will visit local law courts, speak to experts, gather evidence from a crime scene and take part in a mock trial.
