Medical Science

AAQ Level 3 / 2 year Course / Pearson

Medical science is designed for students with an interest in medical science. Medical science covers topics of human body systems, cell ultrastructure, body systems and their dysfunction. Other topics include genetic technologies and the validity and reliability of information used in health science reporting. It is equivalent to one A Level.

Given the vocational nature of the course, students will visit local universities, complete online placements and attend guest lectures delivered by experts.

Teaching and learning methods

Students will develop the following transferable skills that can be used in both higher education and within the workplace:

  • Knowledge and understanding of human physiology, anatomy and pathology
  • Secondary research skills including collection and interpretation of data from valid sources and drawing reasoned conclusions
  • Practical skills in microbiology and their application in the diagnosis of disease
  • Critical thinking
  • Knowledge and understanding of specialist areas relating to biomedical science.

Assessment

This qualification will be assessed via examinations, practical work and portfolio based units.
