Politics

A Level / 2 year Course / Edexcel

Politics involves the study of both political theories and current affairs and the ways in which people and politicians raise and resolve controversial contemporary issues. It is thus a constantly changing, fascinating and unpredictable subject.

More On This Course

The course starts from the fact that we live in a democracy and that this is considered to be the best form of government available. It studies how well our democracy functions, whether it needs further improvement, and the ways reforms might be carried out.

As such, it studies major ideologies, political organisations, elections, referendums, and the behaviour and beliefs of voters. It also studies our constitution and how politicians and institutions such as parliament, devolved bodies, the Supreme Court and the cabinet operate within our democratic system. A similar process is then followed in the study of global politics, though with a focus on the behaviour of world powers, nation-states and global governance institutions such as the United Nations.

Teaching and Learning Methods

There are many opportunities for debate, discussion, and political involvement through local activities, allowing students to engage with current events and explore different political views. You’ll have the chance to voice your opinions, attend debates, and participate in political campaigns. Each year, we also organise a visit to the UK Parliament, where students can witness the political process firsthand, observe debates, and interact with policymakers, enhancing your understanding of British politics and government decisions.

Assessment

A Level Politics is a linear course that is 100% assessed through written examinations at the end of Year 13. The assessment is structured around three two-hour exams, each consisting entirely of essay-based questions. These exams are designed to test students’ understanding of key political concepts, theories, and practices across a variety of topics, both within the UK and on a global scale. Each of the three exams will focus on different core areas of political study, ensuring that students are assessed on a broad range of topics. The four main areas covered are:

  • UK politics
  • UK government
  • Political ideologies
  • Global politics.

This linear approach to assessment ensures that students are prepared to tackle a wide range of political issues and develop a deep understanding of the key themes in political theory, government, and global politics, forming a solid foundation for further study or careers in politics, law, and public policy.

Skills and Careers Insight

A Level Politics provides you with a deep understanding of political systems, ideologies, and the factors that shape governance and policy. You’ll develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills while exploring topics like democracy, human rights, political parties, and international relations. These skills are highly transferable and can lead to careers in law, public policy, government, journalism, international relations, and political consulting. Whether you want to work as a politician, political analyst, diplomat, or in media and communications, A Level Politics provides a strong foundation for a wide range of careers that influence change and shape the future.
