The course involves the study of a wide variety of sports-related units, providing students with a comprehensive and well-rounded understanding of the many aspects of sport. It covers areas such as fitness, coaching, sports psychology, nutrition, anatomy, and performance analysis, allowing students to explore different elements of the field. The aim is to help students gain a deeper appreciation for the different areas within sport, while also allowing them to identify their specific interests and strengths. Through both practical and theoretical learning, students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to pursue further studies or a career in areas such as sports coaching, health and fitness, or sports management.

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sports coaching is equivalent in size to a single A Level and is part of a larger suite of sport qualifications, in a range of sizes, which share the common purpose of helping people to become occupationally ready to take up employment in the sport sector at the appropriate level. This can follow either directly after achieving the qualification or via the stepping stone of higher education in university or college.

Teaching and learning methods

By studying a BTEC National, learners develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required by the sector, including essential employability skills, and apply them in real work content. This is primarily an Applied General qualification, which can be studied alongside other vocational or academic qualifications. Its main purpose is to allow learners to develop the core specialist knowledge, understanding and skills required by the sector, including anatomy, physiology and risk assessment.

Assessment

Students complete the following three mandatory units:

  • Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry
  • Health, Wellbeing and Sport
  • Developing Coaching skills.

BTEC Sport (Single) provides you with essential knowledge and skills in areas such as fitness training, sports coaching, anatomy, and nutrition.
