We were delighted to accompany our students down to The Globe in London for the final of the Poetry By Heart competition. We were full of excitement for the day ahead as we departed from Durham train station.

We extend our congratulations to the three Y12 winners of the Dennis Southwell Award 2024. We would also like to acknowledge and celebrate all the students who entered this year and allowed us to read their remarkable achievements. 

We are thrilled to share the inspiring efforts of our dedicated students who participated in this year’s social action project, funded by the National Citizen Service (NCS) and delivered by Children North East. Their passion and commitment to making a difference have truly shone through in their outstanding initiative.

Every year we run our Durham Sixth Form Centre Writing Competition, this year the theme was Resilience.  We wanted to pick a theme that will allow students across the centre to participate, the piece could be a story, poem or an academic piece in the field of a student’s choice.

Over 200 Year 12 students and their Progress Tutors embarked on an inspiring journey to the Newcastle Utilita Arena to the annual UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) Discovery Exhibition.  Alongside their peers, they went to visit over 100 university, college and apprenticeship representatives to find out about different options and pathways after they leave Durham Sixth Form Centre.

We are thrilled to share the wonderful success of our Pride Picnic event that took place on Friday 14th June. This vibrant celebration was a heartwarming gathering of our community, bringing together different LGBTQIA+ North East charities and organisations to honor Pride Month.

The Durham Sixth Form Centre Golf Academy has earned a strong reputation for producing student golfers that excel both on the course and in the classroom. Former students have gone on to represent their country while others have secured prestigious scholarships in the United States.

Talented students at Durham Sixth Form Centre have been taking part in an inspiring competition designed to encourage pupils in England to choose a poem, learn it by heart and perform it out loud. We are delighted to announce that Year 13 Millie Swainson, who won the competition at Durham Sixth Form Centre, has been successful in gaining a place in the national finals.

The Health and Social Care department regularly invites industry and academic experts into their classrooms to compliment students’ curriculum learning. Recently, students had the opportunity to find out how higher level communication skills are used within counselling and psychotherapy in a fascinating workshop, delivered by Suzy Hansford of Lancashire based Edge Hill University.

The Biology and Applied Science departments have fostered relationships with several Russell Group Universities and, as a result, were able to welcome Dr Jose Guillermo Puello from the University of Manchester. He has previously delivered workshops and progression talks for the department, which have been very well received.
