Year 12 student Lana Crocher attended a prize giving ceremony at Newnham College, Cambridge after winning the third place prize in the college’s Archaeology annual essay writing competition.

Newnham College’s annual essay prize competitions are designed to encourage female sixth-form students to explore university-level subjects, including such subjects as Classics, Maths, and Engineering, and to develop their independent research and writing skills.

A group of students from DSFC gathered on Wednesdays after school over 6 weeks to discuss their thoughts about racism, activism and how to be anti-racist. Hosted by artists Theresa Easton and Theresa Poulton, students were able to engage with Dr Beverley Prevatt Goldstein, author of African Lives in Northern England.

Following the success of Durham Sixth Form Centre’s artist-in-residence (AiR) programme, the first in a series of the community art classes officially launched this term in the Visual Arts Centre. The aim of these classes is to alleviate the impact of the pandemic and offer the wider community accessible workshops.

Every year we run our successful DSFC Writing Competition, this year the theme was Different Perspectives.  The purpose of the competition is to provide a chance for students to be creative and produce something outside of the subjects they study as well as to promote literacy. 

As a result of her outstanding contribution within Army Cadets, Year 12 student Keira Hughes has been selected to be one of the Lord Lieutenant’s cadets in County Durham for the year ahead.

Keira has been a member of Annfield Plain detachment for nearly five years and has been incredibly successful in rising to the rank of Corporal.

A range of students and staff spent February half term in the stunningly beautiful Alpine resort of Sestriere in Italy, to enjoy skiing at the highest resort in the extensive Milky Way ski area. Sestriere sits at the heart of one of Europe’s biggest ski areas known as the Via Lattea (Milky Way).

Lucy Duggan took part in the Historical Association’s Great Debate competition and won the Durham heat. We are thrilled to announce that Lucy is now going through to the finals at Windsor Castle in March.

The Great Debate is the Historical Association’s public-speaking competition for students aged 16-19.

Every year Durham Sixth Form Centre enters a team in the annual European Youth Parliament Inter-Schools Debating Competition. This year the North-East Regional final was held at the Urban Sciences Building, Newcastle University. Our team competed against a number of local schools on the topics of returning artefacts to their origin African countries, the gig economy, the fashion industry and climate change, improving vaccine uptake, immigration in Europe and assisted suicide. 

Every year Durham Sixth Form Centre enters a team into the European Youth Parliament UK Inter- Schools Debating Competition and after being successful in the UK National Session 2021, we are delighted to announce that Lily Local has been selected to attend the Swedish National Session in Lund, March 2022.
