Net Zero Competition

Three of our Year 13 students, Laura Anderson, Evie Edwards and Sophie Lynn, were selected as finalists in the Darlington Economic Campus (DEC) Net Zero competition, demonstrating their commitment to addressing climate change through innovative policy development.

The competition challenged students to create a policy proposal aimed at helping the UK achieve its net zero target by 2050. Our students crafted a proposal that stood out among numerous entries, earning them a place in the finals.

The final event provided a valuable opportunity for professional development, offering insights into policy-making and government work. Throughout the day, students participated in workshops covering policy strategy, career opportunities, and presentation skills.

A highlight was presenting their proposal to a panel of senior civil servants and local Darlington MP, Lola McEvoy and with students receiving a personalised message of encouragement from the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves. The day provided a unique chance for the team to develop critical skills in research, communication, and strategic thinking.

They developed practical insights into:

  • The process of developing government policy
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Professional presentation techniques
  • Approaches to addressing climate change

These students demonstrated initiative, creativity, and a serious approach to one of the most significant challenges of our time. The experience provided them with invaluable professional exposure and learning opportunities.

We are proud of their representation of our sixth form and their engagement with important environmental issues. Congratulations to all three students.
